An early start, crossing the Pennines ("back bone of Britain") and driving up narrow Yorkshire lanes to reach Fountains Abbey, a ruined complex of historical buildings, founded in the 1130's (no, not a typo!!!). Enough of the structure remains to get an idea of its awesome scale and architectural beauty. A stroll around the water gardens and a climb up yet another hill earned us some award winning Yorkshire dairy ice cream.Short stop at the souvenir shop and off to York, a city dating back as far as the Romans, for a wander round the narrow streets known as "The Shambles" and a visit to the awe-inspiring Minster. Huge pasties made for a great late lunch to keep us going til home, where tea with Jeeves was waiting for us. What a day!!!
